Dental crowns in Woodbridge, VA
A dental crown is a custom cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It restores the shape, strength and appearance of a tooth that is too damaged for a filling, and protects it from breaking further.
At 703 Dental, Dr. Bilal Ali uses all-ceramic and porcelain crowns that are matched to the shade of your other teeth, so they blend in. Digital scans replace most messy putty impressions, and the crown is made to fit your bite exactly.
Crowns are commonly needed after a root canal, when a large old filling starts to fail, when a tooth is cracked, or to cover a dental implant. A well-made crown usually lasts 10 to 15 years or more.

Book your appointmentYou may need a crown if
- A tooth is cracked or a piece has broken off
- A large filling is worn, cracked or leaking
- The tooth has had a root canal
- A tooth is badly worn from grinding
- You want to improve a discolored or misshapen tooth
- You have an implant that needs a final tooth
Step by step
How a dental crown is made
A crown usually takes two visits, a few weeks apart.
Step 1
Exam
Digital X-rays confirm the root and nerve are healthy, or that the tooth has been treated.
Step 2
Preparation
The tooth is numbed and reshaped so the crown fits over it.
Step 3
Scan
A digital scan records the tooth and bite. You leave with a temporary crown.
Step 4
Fitting
The final crown is checked for fit, bite and color, then permanently cemented.
Dental crown cost and insurance
The cost of a crown depends on the material and whether other work, such as a core build-up or root canal, is needed first. PPO dental insurance typically covers a portion of crowns as a major service, and Virginia Medicaid and FAMIS may cover crowns in some cases.
We confirm your coverage and give you a written estimate before treatment. Without insurance, our membership plan discounts crowns, and payment plans spread the cost.
Why choose 703 Dental for your crown
Dr. Bilal Ali, DDS, founded 703 Dental around 2004 and still leads treatment at the Woodbridge office. He graduated at the top of his class from Texas A&M Baylor College of Dentistry. He prepares and fits every crown himself and checks your bite carefully so the new tooth feels natural.
Patients come to our Minnieville Road office from Woodbridge, Dale City, Lake Ridge, Montclair, Occoquan, Dumfries and across Prince William County. We are accepting new patients, our team speaks English and Spanish, and 703 Dental is rated 4.9 from 423 Google reviews.
Crown materials and alternatives
Not every damaged tooth needs a full crown. When enough healthy tooth remains, an onlay covers only the damaged cusps, and bonding or a large filling can repair smaller breaks. We recommend a crown when the tooth needs to be held together, for example after a root canal or when a crack runs across it.
For most teeth we use all-ceramic crowns, which look natural and are strong enough for back teeth. Porcelain fused to metal is sometimes used on bridges. Your crown is shaded to match your neighboring teeth, and if you plan to whiten, we whiten first so the crown matches the brighter shade.
If a tooth cannot be saved, a crown on a dental implant replaces it. We plan implants with 3D CBCT imaging and restore them at our Woodbridge office.
Caring for your crown
- Avoid sticky or hard foods while you have a temporary crown
- Brush twice a day and floss around the crown where it meets the gum
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth
- Do not chew ice or open packages with your teeth
- Keep your regular cleanings so we can check the edges of the crown

How long does a dental crown last?
Most crowns last 10 to 15 years, and many last longer with good care and regular checkups.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is fully numbed, so you should feel pressure but not pain. Mild sensitivity for a few days is normal.
How many visits does a crown take?
Usually two: one to prepare the tooth and take a digital scan, and one to fit the final crown a few weeks later.
Will my crown look natural?

Does insurance cover crowns?
Most PPO plans cover part of a crown. We accept Medicaid, FAMIS and Medicare Advantage dental benefits and check your coverage first.
